City Residents' Association The Center City Residents' Association is a volunteer membership organization that works to preserve and improve the quality of life for all Center City Philadelphia residents. Activities include monitoring and advocating on zoning issues; weekly sidewalk cleanings; town watch groups; a community garden and tree planting program; discounted car and home insurance; house tours; and block parties. Village Association A nonprofit corporation dedicated to the creation of a community that promotes the values of arts, culture, religion, education, housing and entrepreneurship in community development, the association works with existing community development organizations and initiatives to coordinate, plan, and promote projects that advance the revitalization of the South Street West area as a business and entertainment center, and preserves and fosters its rich cultural history. Anderson Recreation Center Named for the celebrated classical contralto singer and civil rights groundbreaker, born in South Philadelphia in 1897, the Center offers a variety of cultural and sports programs for residents of all ages. Odunde,
Inc. Odunde, Inc. is an educational and cultural organization that produces year-round programs focusing on African Diaspora culture. A highlight is the annual Odunde festival, one of the oldest African-American summer street fairs in the nation. Odunde is an organizational member of SSWBA. South
Philadelphia Renaissance Project To commemorate generations past and inspire those of the present and future, the Project aims to produce 50 hours' worth of video oral histories of South Philadelphia's ethnic cultures in order to promote the area as a destination for tourists, historians, the media, schoolchildren, and small businesspeople. of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA) This area neighborhood association, serving residents south of South and west of Broad, is undertaking a number of projects to improve the neighborhood. Recent activities include testifying at a public hearing to designate the area as a HUD "Renewal Community," and working with the City to offer anti-predatory lending counseling to homeowners. It operates the Seconds on South Thrift Shop at 1635 South Street, an SSWBA member business. The association holds meetings the second Wednesday of each month. Universal
Business Support Center Universal Companies is a nonprofit organization chaired by Kenny Gamble, a well-known former music producer who is seeking to reinvest in our South Philadelphia neighborhood. Universal Companies operates the Universal Business Support Center (UBSC) to support entrepreneurs with new and existing businesses. The Center assists entrepreneurs individually with a number of small business concerns and also conducts workshops on small business development, financial investment tax preparation, credit restoration, budgeting and money management, business plans, accounting and bookkeeping, insurance, and managing employee benefits. |
